The release contains two drivers, the SQLSRV driver and the PDO_SQLSRV driver. The SQLSRV extension provides a procedural interface while the PDO_SQLSRV extension implements PDO for accessing data in all editions of SQL Server 2005 and later (including SQL Azure). These drivers rely on the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client's ODBC driver to handle the low-level communication with SQL Server.

Microsoft has published the source code to the driver on this site. With each successive update, we will revisit this plan. We've seen too many projects over-reach in their plans to be responsive to the community. We would prefer to start with a more conservative approach and make sure we're successfully delivering on that before expanding. We understand that many developers will download the source code to create their own build(s) of the driver. However, Microsoft supports only the Microsoft signed versions of the driver.

We hope you enjoy using the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server.

The Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server Team

August 5, 2010 : Version 2.0 is released !!!!
Microsoft reached an important interoperability milestone: the release of the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0!!

The major highlight of this release is the addition of the PDO_SQLSRV driver, which adds support for PHP Data Objects (PDO). In addition to accessing SQL Server, both drivers (SQLSRV and PDO_SQLSRV) also enable PHP developers to easily connect to and use Microsoft's cloud database offering, SQL Azure, and enjoy the benefits of a reliable and scalable relational database in the cloud, as well as functionality like exposing OData feeds. Some additional key highlights, how we engaged with the PHP community to deliver a release that met their expectations and that we released it under an Apache 2.0 license.
Read more on our blog >
(Note: we are working with the site admins to change the license to Apache 2.0)
Providing a PDO driver in SQL Server Driver for PHP 2.0 will enable popular PHP applications like Drupal 7 to use the PDO “PHP style” and interoperate smoothly with Microsoft’s SQL Server database.
Read more on our blog >

October 8, 2009 : Version 1.1 is released !!!!
Version 1.1 is now available. Version 1.1 contains the following new features: Support for UTF-8 data, uses SQL Server 2008 Native Client, new functions that indicate if a result set has rows, scrollable result sets, the ability to retrieve date and time types as strings, and the ability to disable MARS (multiple active result sets) when you connect to a database.
Read more on our blog >

Updated Wiki: Home

Welcome to the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server project!
The Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server are PHP 5 extensions that allows for the reading and writing of SQL Server data from within PHP scripts. The release contains two drivers, the SQLSRV driver and the {PDO_SQLSRV} driver. The SQLSRV extension provides a procedural interface while the {PDO_SQLSRV} extension implements PDO for accessing data in all editions of SQL Server 2005 and later (including SQL Azure). These drivers rely on the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client's ODBC driver to handle the low-level communication with SQL Server.

How do I access the pre-built version of the driver from the MSDN download site?
You can download the driver from the MSDN download site:

Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0.

Will Microsoft support these drivers?
Microsoft supports the Microsoft signed versions of the driver. If using a custom built version of the driver and problems are encountered, please reproduce the problem with the Microsoft-built driver before contacting Microsoft support services.

Where can I get more information on the drivers?
You can keep up with other announcements through our team blog. There's also an MSDN Forum for questions and feedback on the drivers. Do note that the MSDN Forum is the recommended by the team.

Where can I find the documentation for the drivers?
Both drivers are fully documented on MSDN Online as well as in a help file included with the drivers. MSDN also accepts community contributions to improve the documentation, and we welcome you to provide the necessary updates or corrections if we missed something. We also include two fully functional example applications (one for each driver) based on the AdventureWorks sample database also available on Codeplex.

How will Microsoft respond to feedback and update the drivers?
We will be responsive to feedback on the MSDN Forum and our team blog, weighing in on both feature requests and bug reports. When we update the driver on the MSDN download site, we also push the corresponding changes to the source code up to this site.

How can I contribute to this project?
At this time we are not able to accept code contributions for these drivers. We understand this situation is not perfect. Until we reach the stage where we can accept contributions, we strongly recommend filing bug reports in the SQL Server product feedback system or post the issue on our MSDN Forum because these sites have a larger community and Microsoft presence. Another advantage of the SQL Server product feedback system is that we able to contact the person filing the bug should the need arise, and the community gets better visibility on the issue.

Updated Wiki: Announcements

Announcements

August 5, 2010 : Version 2.0 is released !!!!
Microsoft reached an important interoperability milestone: the release of the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0!!

The major highlight of this release is the addition of the PDOSQLSRV driver, which adds support for PHP Data Objects (PDO). In addition to accessing SQL Server, both drivers (SQLSRV and PDOSQLSRV) also enable PHP developers to easily connect to and use Microsoft's cloud database offering, SQL Azure, and enjoy the benefits of a reliable and scalable relational database in the cloud, as well as functionality like exposing OData feeds. Another key highlight is on how we engaged with the PHP community to deliver a release that met their expectations.
Read more on our blog >

July 26, 2010 : New survey to get your feedback/suggestions!
While we are always open to feedback from all on our blog/forum/site and have been acting on it (adding PDO driver, tweaking architecture and design, etc.), we have just gone live with our survey to reach a broad audience. It’s a short survey, should take less than 10 mins and will be live until August 16 5:00 PM PST. We look forward to all feedback/suggestions.
Read more on our blog >

Will Microsoft support these drivers?
Microsoft supports the Microsoft signed versions of the driver. If using a custom built version of the driver and problems are encountered, please reproduce the problem with the Microsoft-built driver before contacting Microsoft support services.

Where can I get more information on the drivers?
You can keep up with other announcements through our team blog. There's also an MSDN Forum for questions and feedback on the drivers. _Do note that the MSDN Forum is the recommended by the team.

July 26, 2010 : New survey to get your feedback/suggestions!
While we are always open to feedback from all on our blog/forum/site and have been acting on it (adding PDO driver, tweaking architecture and design, etc.), we have just gone live with our survey to reach a broad audience. It’s a short survey, should take less than 10 mins and will be live until August 16 5:00 PM PST. We look forward to all feedback/suggestions.
Read more on our blog >

June 15, 2010 : Version 2.0 CTP2 is released !!!!
It is our pleasure to announce the release of Community Technology Preview 2 (CTP2) of the SQL Server Driver for PHP 2.0!.
Read more on our blog >

April 19, 2010 : Version 2.0 CTP1 is released !!!!
Today at DrupalCon SF 2010, we are reaching an important milestone by releasing a Community Technology Preview (CTP) of the new SQL Server Driver for PHP 2.0, which includes support for PHP Data Objects (PDO).

Welcome to the Microsoft SQL Server Driver for PHP project!
The SQL Server Driver for PHP allows PHP developers to access SQL Server databases. The SQL Server Driver for PHP relies on the Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver to handle the low-level communication with SQL Server. As a result, the SQL Server Driver for PHP is only supported on Windows.

Microsoft has published the source code to the driver on this site. You can download the source code and provide feedback in the form of bug reports and feature requests.

We understand that many developers will download the source code to create their own build(s) of the driver. However, Microsoft supports only the signed version of the driver from the MSDN download site. If you're using a custom built version of the driver and encounter problems, please reproduce the problem with the Microsoft-built driver before contacting Microsoft support.

With each successive update, we will revisit this plan. We've seen too many projects over-reach in their plans to be responsive to the community. We would prefer to start with a more conservative approach and make sure we're successfully delivering on that before expanding.

We hope you enjoy using the Microsoft SQL Server Driver for PHP.

The Microsoft SQL Server Driver for PHP Team
